Element of Design: Line

Nilo home office

Vertical Line
The different vertical lines that are seen in this room would include; the windows, the table and chair legs, and the bookcases. Vertical lines make the viewer's eye move up and down in the room. It would make a room feel much taller.

Curved Line
There are many curvy lines in this room. You can see these lines on; the stair way, the chairs, the light fixtures, and even in the smaller items like lamps and baskets. The effect a curved line would give off would be Curvy lines would usually be found in a more feminine room to give it a feel of gracefulness.

Horizontal Line
Horizontal lines make the viewer's eyes move back and forth across the room. They make a room feel much wider than it actually is. In this example, the shelving, the desk, and the beams on the ceiling are creating horizontal lines.

Diagonal Line
A diagonal line brings excitment to a room. It make a room feel more energectic. In this example, the windows create a diagonal line. The lamp and other small items also create diagonal lines. Diagonal lines draw your eyes up and down and make a viewer look around constantly.

2013 Color Forecast

Color forecasters are a mix between designers and sociologists. They understand what trends will be hot in the year to come. The forecast for the upcoming year will be neutral colors with a pop of a bold color. The neutral colors will either be shades of grey or shades of brown, and the pops of bold colors will be reds, blues, or greens. With the many shades of a neutral color in a room, it creates a monochromatic scheme. The color forecasters are inspired by many different things; including fashion and other countries.

Color Schemes

Monochromatic Scheme:

Monochromatic Color Scheme

In the above image, I chose to use the color green. Green is a cool color that is very relaxing and natural. I also chose to use dark woodwork to add a warmer feel which the family asked for. The decore in the room "matches" the color green. Since the color green is often seen in nature, I added decore pieces that would also be seen in nature. This includes the wall art, the sculpture, and the pillows. The different shades of green are what gives this room a warm monochromatic feel.

Analogous Scheme:
Analogous Color Scheme

An analogous color scheme is made up of two colors that are next to each other on the color wheel. In the above image, I used green and blue to create an analogous color scheme. The reason the room is so dark is because it is meant to be a theater room. There are lights located along the back side of the room above the seating. I tried to maximize the seating as well since there are five people in the family. The sofa alone could seat five people. Accent pillows and blankets are a great way to accesorize the room and add more color. I feel I acheived this technique as well as add more comfort to the room.

Complementary Scheme:
Complementary Color Scheme
In the above image, I used the colors blue and orange to create a complementary color scheme. Complementary colors are two colors that are across each other on the color wheel. I felt that blue and orange were a good choice for a teenage boy's room. The colors are very bright and energetic. The nutral colors such as tan and brown help tone down the brightness of the other colors.

Triadic Scheme:

Tradic Color Scheme
The above image is composed of many different colors. I chose to use the warm colors such as red and yellow. I feel that warm colors are very energetic and welcoming. I then added the blue to make it feel more calming. This loft area would be used for the family's game room. I intend on adding a game table in the center of the room. I added seating and art work to the small nook to fill the space with a comfortable atmosphere. I also added a small desk and chair off the the left side so the kids could have a place to work.
